Abstract: The CLS is a 5-year study that aims to increase our knowledge of a broad range of health-related behaviors of college students, including illicit drug use. Other behaviors to be studied include the excessive use of alcohol, non-medical use of prescription drugs, nutritional habits, physical activity, health care use, and involvement in high-risk behaviors, such as drunk driving and violence. Broadening the focus will fill large gaps in our knowledge concerning the health needs of college students and provide information that can serve as the foundation for needed interventions. Outcomes to be studied include academic performance, student retention, student health—both mental and physical—and realization of career goals.
